Ingravida
A virtual reality work by Rodrigo Red Sandoval, developed with Virtual Curation Studio and shown at the MAZ, Museo de Arte de Zapopan.
The project
Ingravida, 2026 · Virtual reality headset and virtual environment · Dimensions variable
Ingravida is a work by Rodrigo Red Sandoval developed in collaboration with Virtual Curation Studio. It is part of the exhibition Sinfonía industrial en dos tiempos, curated by Marco Rountree and Alma Saladín, at the MAZ, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, from September 26, 2026 to February 7, 2027.
The piece proposes an aerial journey through a city that has lost its ground. At cloud level, cables, billboards and antennas survive, everything that transmits, along with whatever has made its home there. Carrier pigeons cross this suspended landscape like a parallel network, able to divert or interrupt the systems that try to order the city.
The artist
Rodrigo Red works between Amsterdam and Mexico City, making assemblages and installations from crafted materials, found objects and digitally produced elements. His subject is infrastructure: what holds daily life up, from the skeleton to gas, water and electrical networks.
The world
An urban environment with no buildings and no streets. In their place, networks of cables and billboards extend past any visible beginning or end, inhabited by rats and pigeons. The atmosphere is uncanny and openly theatrical, and hidden works and interactive artefacts along the route release the story as the visitor finds them.
What we did
Only at the MAZ
Ingravida can only be experienced in person, with a virtual reality headset, at the MAZ, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, as part of Sinfonía industrial en dos tiempos (September 26, 2026 to February 7, 2027). Below we show how the world was built and, at the end, some photos and videos documenting the work.
Infrastructure as language
The environment was built from real observation. Cables, junction boxes, handrails, pipes and billboard frames were photographed across Mexico City and Amsterdam, then studied as vocabulary rather than reference: which pieces repeat, how they join, and what they reveal when nothing else is left standing.
First steps
Modeling the city
Each urban element was modeled from those studies and rebuilt as a kit, so the environment could be assembled from real geometry and extended without ever resolving into a skyline.
Hidden works and artefacts
Interactive artefacts along the route reference the artist's sculpture and release the story as the visitor encounters them.
The work
Some photos and videos documenting the work: views of the journey inside the headset, the work in the gallery and a video fragment.
